In the discourse of contemporary social dynamics, there is a dichotomy of opinions concerning whether we have become more reliant on others or more self-sufficient. This essay discusses both views and explains why I believe the arguments for higher levels of interconnectedness are more compelling.

Advocates for increased reliance on others point to the web of economic and social ties that bind us. For instance, the present-day economy is a tapestry of collaborative projects that involve people working together in physical spaces as well as remotely online. Moreover, social media platforms have created communities that transcend geographical boundaries, fostering relationships and support networks that hinge on collective participation. For example, crowd-funding and online activism are clear indicators of people pooling their resources and efforts for common goals.

Conversely, there is an argument to be made for the growing autonomy of individuals. This is mainly spurred by technological advances that independence. To illustrate, there is a wealth of information available online that allows people to learn and solve problems autonomously. From self-help tutorials to online courses, individuals can acquire skills and knowledge independently. Furthermore, people can make a living without the need for employers or colleagues. The gig economy also embodies this trend, with more people becoming self-employed, setting their schedules, and relying on only their own skillset to complete their work.

In conclusion, I believe both sides of the argument have merits. However, I think the argument for interdependence is stronger. While technology has undoubtedly provided avenues for individual autonomy, our daily lives are intricately connected to the actions and contributions of others. Even in scenarios where individuals pursue independent endeavours, they remain embedded within a network of relationships and support systems.
