A group of St Petersburg local politicians seeking the ouster of President Vladimir Putin over the Ukraine conflict face the dissolution of the regional council following a judge's decision on Tuesday. The judge ruled that a number of previous council meetings were invalid and allowed the district governor to dissolve it. Dmitry Palyuga, another council member, said the same court later fined him 47,000 rubles ($1,100) to "discredit" the authorities by calling for Putin's dismissal. Court officials could not be reached by phone for comment. In the next two days, four more people from the Smolninskoye local council will go to court. Last week, a group of council deputies asked the State Duma to accuse Putin of treason with the state and get rid of him. They presented a number of reasons, such as Russia's military losses in Ukraine and the damage to the Russian economy caused by Western sanctions. Another local representative said 65 municipal leaders from St. Petersburg, Moscow and other places had signed a petition calling for Putin's resignation. That petition was made public by another local representative on Monday.
