Writing Metadata for Git Sync with Egencache | Gentoo Guide
When moving from rsync to git for syncing repositories, you will not be generating metadata to use the eix command. This video covers how to add a script to portage that executes after a sync that will generate metadata.
UPDATE: if you want to sync the main gentoo git repo replace the default url with "https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/sync/g..." which comes with pre-generated metadata for eix.
