Let’s talk for a minute about this discovery process.
It’s what we refer to as the learning and educational process in the franchise industry.
It’s how a brand gets to know you, and ultimately what type owner owner you would be. How are you with keeping, making, and scheduling appointments? When you show up to a call, are you actively listening, or are you distracted? Are you forgetful, constantly missing calls or not following up if an emergency arises? Are you really fit to own a business?
These may be some tough questions, but your actions speak volumes when you are evaluating franchises.
Because, psst 🤫: They are evaluating you too.
Here are some important things to note, that you may not know:
1. The discovery process moves at YOUR pace. Some of our clients move very quickly (4-6 weeks), others take a full 6 months (or longer!) You will learn very fast that I keep cadence with my clients on THEIR timeline, no one else’s.
2. When you first get started it is a low time commitment, but it does begin to become more in depth as the weeks continue. Many calls can be done during a lunch break, or before or after work if you work a traditional 9-5 job currently and are exploring this in addition to your current role.
3. You’ll be learning through a series of phone calls, webinars, and reviewing FDDs (Franchise Disclosure Documents). Some companies may also ask you to compete a questionnaire or personality profile to better get to know you.
There are tiered steps to the discovery process, and every brand is different. Most will do an introductory call, a unit economics call, a webinar or provide more information regarding operations and marketing and some form validation where you hear from current and active owners. This is usually followed by a discovery day or meet the team day, where you will meet and greet (in person or virtually) the corporate and executive staff.
At the end of the discovery process, you may be awarded a franchise opportunity. This is the brands formal invitation for you to join the organisation to become a franchisee.
