i-Size explained
============
What is iSize? It's the name of the new European safety regulation designed to improve safety levels of child car seats.
Tell me more. Do I need to upgrade?
Rest assured, you don't need to rush out and buy a new car seat. i-Size doesn't replace current legislation -- it runs alongside it. It's not about making customers buy again, it's about offering another choice.
why was it introduced?
Good question. There are 2 main reasons:
1) Lots of parents are moving their babies into forward-facing car seats too soon. The danger is that in a collision, baby's neck isn't sufficiently developed to support a relatively heavy head. Keeping babies rear facing for longer is the safest bet.
2) Lots of car seats aren't installed correctly. In fact it's estimated that over 70% are poorly fitted.
So what's changed?
OK, there are five key features:
1) Rear facing to 15 months
Why? Because rearward facing car seats are significantly safer than forward facing seats, offering better protection to the head, neck and spine in the event of an accident.
2) Improved protection
i-Size seats have to pass much more rigorous safety tests than ever before. More sensitive test dummies are used, and for the first time ever there's a set of criteria for side impact testing.
3) Height classification
Choosing a car seat based on a child's weight can be confusing for parents. Instead i-Size uses height -- a bit like buying clothes. Only at 75-80cm and 15 months can little one switch to forward facing, so early upsizing is prevented.
4) ISOFIX--only seats
ISOFIX car seats simply click in place with no need to use your car's seat belt so there's much less chance of incorrect fitting. In fact they're reassuringly easy to install!
5) Car compatibility
And finally, i-Size means peace of mind. Currently, not all car seats fit all cars, but all i-Size car seats fit most cars equipped with ISOFIX. The first i-Size cars are now available too.
Pop into any Kiddicare store and a member of the Pit Stop crew will happily give you an i-Size demo. Already got a car seat? We'll make sure it's safely fitted while you're there.
