Hey everyone, my name is Masud, in todays video I’ll be explaining what passive listening skills are and why they’re important to the role of a physiotherapist.

Passive listening is the ability to consume information from an individual whilst not responding.

It’s an integral part of subjective assessments in physio.

When we are just starting out as physiotherapy students and junior physios, we tend to not listen to our patients because we just want to get out our questions and make sure we’re getting a detailed subjective history taking.

Even though we have good intentions to get as much information as possible from the patient, this doesn’t necessarily allow the patient to fully open up about their problems.

So doing it this way usually takes a lot longer and there are abrupt disruptions to the patients story telling which disrupts the flow of the assessment.

As we get more experienced as physiotherapists we tend to selectively pick out bits of information to focus on from the patients story telling for instance like if they’ve said they got their pain after they went on a walk.

We focus on on that and ask how long was your walk distance wise? What kind of surface was it - hilly or flat? Did you take any breaks in between?

So basically getting the details out of their chat and they respond a lot better that way after we have allowed them to say their story.

Sometimes if you’re seeing a number of people during the day you do tend to have your own way of assessment taking especially if you’ve seen so many of the same thing your pattern recognition instantly kicks in and takes over and you just ask directly the questions that need to be asked.

Again it comes with experience but when you’re starting out passive listening helps you to build better rapport and complete higher quality assessments.

Hope you found this useful, thanks for watching!
