Polish Sounds of the Future // Past - Hańba! at Jeonju Int'l Sori Festival 2020

PROJECT INFO

Polish Sounds of the Future // Past (미래 // 과거의 폴란드 음악) is an etno-futuristic artistic project of Planet Foundation, co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of Republic of Poland from the Culture Promotion Fund. The goal of the project is to present Korean and international public valuable modern Polish artists who creatively re-interpret Polish folk and traditional music in modern ways. The project is aimed at provoking intercultural dialogue between Poland and Korea, regarding possible ways of "remaking the sounds of the past into the sounds of the future" - with respect to source material, but using creative ways that make these old melodies and instruments attractive to new generations of listeners.

CONCERT INFO

The presented video is a special premiere show, including music material from a whole array of releases of the group, prepared and recorded live by Hańba! at HEVRE in Kraków in September 2020 for Sori Festival and its public. Especially for this concert, Hańba! prepared a brand new instrumental tune inspired by Korean folk classic "Sae Taryeong". All songs presented in the set are embedded in contextual visuals - and Hańba! is performing in "vintage-modern" costumes artfully designed and created by Anna Maria Zygmunt.

ARTIST INFO

Hańba! ("Disgrace!") is one of most original and certainly one of most interesting Polish music groups of the last decade - which is reflected in critical acclaim it has already earned in Poland and around the World. The idea behind the foundation of Hanba! was to travel 80 years back in time, to the tumultuous time of Central-European "interwar" - and to imagine that punk rock was born in that time in Poland, and not some 40 years later in the UK. Due to that fact, from its beginning the band functions in an alternative timeline, with its first release from 2013 set in 1933, its latest LP from 2020 set in 1940, etc.. In their music Hańba! uses "working class related" instruments (tuba, accordion, banjo, marching bass drum, clarinet...), socially conscious poems, costumes and graphic design - all from the interwar period. At the same time, Hańba! gives them all a totally modern context, by applying a punk-influenced musical expression, and by performing these interwar poems which perfectly fit the current socio-economic situation of the modern World. The result is one-of-a-kind Central European folk-punk from the 1930's, which translates to a thrilling, unusual musical phenomenon, with "old-yet-disturbingly-current" poetic lyrics.

Hańba! won a number of important Polish awards (eg. in 2014 at "Nowa Tradycja" Polish Radio competition, which is the most esteemed etno / folk award in Poland, or in 2018 when it received prestigious "Paszport Polityki" award, as the most important Polish artist of the year in category of "popular music"). As to confirm this, just a few days ago Hańba! received a "Fryderyk" award for their album "1939", voted as "Best Folk / World Polish Album Of The Year 2019" - which is the most prestigious music award in Poland. The band spent the last 7 years playing hundreds of concerts while touring around Poland, Europe and the World (USA, Spain, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Denmark, Netherlands, Australia...). Hańba! gave widely acclaimed performances at biggest festivals around the World (Primavera 2017, South by SouthWest / SXSW 2017, Colours of Ostrava 2017, WOMAD 2018, Med Festival 2018, Rudolstadt Festival 2018, MONA FOMA 2019) and in Poland (OFF Festival, Open'er Festival, Culture Crossing Festival).
