A skips and B skips are standard track and field exercises that many athletes will have heard of and have performed.
HOWEVER - they are VERY often done incorrectly and their use is not fully understood.
Primarily developed as a conditioning exercise, they also have a useful purpose (which most use them for) in developing technique.
A skips are, in our opinion, more useful for technique - unless you are a hurdlers, when development of the B skip as a replicator for the lead leg is useful.
As with many drills, one of the key elements is dorsiflexion. Other elements we can look at are the level of knee lift. If we drive up to quad block, this is generally good as a drill. However, there is also merit in driving the knee higher and working to strengthen the iliopsoas complex - in particular the psoas muscle, the only one that can drive our knee higher than 90 degrees.
We look at the pros and cons of both.
