Muscle Adaptations in Sport - Why both Training AND Recovery are Important.
How do we get fitter and stonger?
When we regularly exercise in order to get better at our sport, whichever one we may choose, we need to train our bodies to cope better with what is being thrown at them. The effects of exercise on the body are investigated in this video.
This comes through us training and then the body adapting to the stimulus we've given it and making sure it can cope better next time. This is called adaptation. In sports training this is one of the most important topics to understand - once you get your head around recovery being when you get fitter and not training, you'll be able to progress far further with your sport.
In this video we explain the processes by which the body adapts and makes us fitter, faster and stronger. Exercise effects how our muscles react to overload that will make us better athletes.
The key element in all of this is balancing the amount of training with the amount of recovery we get. Adaptation through recovery is absolutely vital - without enough rest we are going to over train and actually become worse at the sport we do, even if we are putting huge amount of effort into getting better.
When we train - we get tired and the muscular system breaks down a bit. This is why we are less able to perform well at the end of a tough session. We are getting less fit during the session and can't run as fast, jump as high etc. Once the session is over our body start to recover and effectively says "that was tough - I need to make sure I'm better equipped to cope with that again as clearly this is something this person wants to do to me!"
It therefore begins the process of rebuilding muscle - and does so a little stronger than before to cope with the exercise it anticipates doing again.
