Kevin DeVivo, Vehicles Manager at DATTCO Sales & Service, has worked diligently to bring 24 passenger all electric school buses to Town of Middletown Connecticut, with a fleet of ten more planned. This bus was on display for the public to tour, during an EV and e-bike showcase on that same glorious spring day, right next to the Connecticut State Capitol in Hartford!

These unique vehicles are made through a partnership with Ford for the E-350 front-end/chassis, Collins Bus Corporation for the body, and Motiv Power Systems for the motor and battery that replaced the gas drivetrain. All three companies are based here in the United States.

In this video, Kevin gives the EV Club of Connecticut’s Paul Braren a very close look at the features of the bus, explains a bit about how the retrofit works, and shares the real world range and charge times too, along with a discussion about battery chemistry (Sodium Nickel vs Lithium Ion) and recycling. Kevin also mentions even larger electric school buses and different batteries, along with tentative plans to upgrade from overnight AC charging to DC fast charging. Perhaps someday he’ll invite EV Club of Connecticut to DATTCO in New Britain to have a look someday, please drop a comment below if that’s something you’re interested in seeing, or if you have any questions.
