As I said at the beginning of the text, Lukomir is the highest and most isolated mountain village in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Bjelasnica Mountain. This rural village is known for its traditional Bosnian village life, where people still follow old customs and live in stone houses with shingle roofs.
The village life in Lukomir is simple and deeply connected to nature. The villagers primarily rely on livestock farming, especially sheep herding, and produce dairy products like cheese. Due to the high altitude, the climate is harsh, and winters can be very cold, forcing many locals to move to lower areas during the colder months. However, in the summer, Lukomir becomes a lively rural mountain village, with people returning to tend to their animals and fields.
Lukomir has preserved its traditional way of life, making it one of the last authentic Bosnian mountain villages. The locals wear handmade wool clothing, and women often knit socks and scarves. The village is known for its authentic Bosnian food, such as pita (traditional pie), lamb dishes, and homemade dairy products. The people are welcoming, and visiting Lukomir offers a rare glimpse into a traditional rural lifestyle that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Lukomir is a popular destination for hiking and eco-tourism. Many hikers visit the village while trekking across Bjelasnica Mountain, enjoying stunning views of Rakitnica Canyon and the surrounding landscapes. Tourists can experience village life firsthand, stay in traditional houses, and try homemade Bosnian cuisine. The area is also rich in wildflowers, old tombstones (stećci), and breathtaking scenery.
Lukomir remains one of the most fascinating places to experience authentic rural Bosnia, offering a unique mix of history, nature, and traditional village life.
