As a parent, you want what's best for your child. You also want them to be happy.
But as all parents know, you can't always have both.
You see, giving your child a computeror cell phone makes them happy. But there are some things online that can make them... not so happy.
For example, chances are that the first thing they'll do with their new device is down- load their favourite apps or log on to their favourite social networking sites.
But over time, the personal things your child posts can live online forever, without them realizing it.
As well, without proper privacy settings, you child has no control over who sees what they post.
And people online aren't always who they seem.
But going online isn't the only thing your child will use a new device for – they'll use it for almost everything.
So if they lose their phone, they might be giving away a lot of important personal information.
While you may never be able to out-tech your child, there are some easy things you can do to make being online safer and more fun for them.
First, if you give your child a phone or computer, make sure you lock it with a PIN or a strong password.
That way, if it's lost or stolen, it's difficult for someone to hack into it and access your child's information.
Second, you should also turn on services or use an app that helps you find the phone and, if necessary, remotely lock it or erase all of its data.
Third, you should make sure that your child knows everyone they talk to online in real life.
You also need to have a serious conversation about the not so nice things that can happen in cyberspace...like cyberbullying.
So talk with your kids, and make sure they know what kinds of words and images are inappropriate to share... and to receive.
If you follow these tips, your child will be happy online, and you'll be happy knowing that they're safe.
