As important as it is to brush and bathe every day, it’s imperative you pay attention to caring for your vagina. There are some ground rules to keep in mind when it comes to vaginal health. Gynaecologist Dr. Astha Dayal shares the do’s and dont’s:
Use clean water only to wash yourself: This is a must to avoid any chances of infection.
Avoid scented soaps, douches, perfumes, bubble baths in the vagina: Your vagina is a very sensitive area and all these may disrupt the bacterial balance, and again, result in infection.
Clean from front to back and dab yourself dry: It’s essential that you clean yourself every time you take a pee break. But make sure you clean from front to back, and dab yourself dry, to prevent any chances of the spread of bacteria from the anus.
Do not wear tight synthetic underwear or clothing that makes you sweat: Tight underwear can lead to chafing of the skin and vaginal irritation. Besides, it may even decrease blood circulation in the area and lead to complications. Synthetic fabric is not breathable, so the risk of moisture being trapped and retained increases and this may lead to yeast or bacterial infections.
Use condoms to prevent STI infections: Not only are condoms a protection against pregnancy, they also are an effective barrier against several STI infections.
