What is the difference between hymen blood and period blood? In this video, Lead Consultant Gynecologist Dr. Astha Dayal explains how the hymen is a thin tissue/ membrane partially covering the vaginal opening and has been present since birth. When the hymen is torn, at the first intercourse, the tear may sometimes lead to bleeding, known as the hymen's blood. The hymen blood is usually small in amount and resolves on its own in a day or two. Traditionally it is considered a mark of virginity. It generally thins out and tears with regular intercourse.

Additionally, she explains how period blood is different from hymen blood because, in period blood, the uterus sheds a lining present every month due to hormonal changes, which comes from the mouth of the uterus to the cervix. Regular bleeding occurs every month and lasts between 3 days to a week. In contrast, hymen bleeding happens once or twice when you start having intercourse or when the hymen is torn during physical activity and lasts for a day or two.

Hymen breaks can cause pain or light bleeding for some people, but most won't feel anything. Using tampons or day-to-day activities will cause it to stretch and thin over time since it is a flexible piece of tissue. The color of the hymen is fresh red, whereas the period blood color differs. Moreover, consult a health care provider if you notice that hymen bleeding lasts for longer than three days.

A hymen is a collar of tissue that surrounds the vaginal opening. All hymens are different, just like all bodies. The appearance of a hymen does not reveal anything about virginity.
