Trial Director 360 Speed Test - Do you really need 6GB Graphics Card?

With the release of Trial Director 360, you suddenly needed to have a laptop with 6GB of video card memory in order to be within the recommended specs for Trial Director. This was always a bit of a surprise for me, and I didn't even have a laptop with that much graphics card in it for me to test it out.

But recently, I did pick up a more robust laptop, and here is a test of 3 different laptops with varying amounts of discrete graphics memory. For the test, I timed how long it would take to import 10 PDFs and a total of 3,630 pages of documents. And because you can't publish or preview a document in Trial Director 360 until the app processes and converts all those pdf pages into .png, I wanted to time how long it would take for Trial Director to be able to take those pages from hard drive to jury screen.

Surprisingly, the results across all three laptops were pretty similar, with no benefit at all coming from having discrete graphics. It seemed like the only real determining factor was the power of the processor, with the latest intel chips performing better than older ones.

Does this mean that we don't need discrete graphics like the manufacturer recommends? Not necessarily. It is likely that the test I have created includes a task that was never intended to use the GPU. But since Trial Director won't tell us which processes do benefit from discrete graphics, it leaves us in the dark as to why we really need those 6GB in the first place.

If you have any insight as to where those 6GB come in handy, please let me know in the comments. I'd love to be able to run more speed tests.
