This week on The Pulse, we are designing medical devices for space, diagnosing the undiagnosable, reconstructing vessels in 3D, and smelling salmonella so we don't get sick. This episode features:

-- Biomedical Experiments Held at Space Station: The NASA International Space Station National Laboratory office, and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space have joined forces to design a bone densitometer.

-- Diagnosing the Undiagnosable: 350 million people worldwide are affected by rare or undiagnosed diseases, and whole-genome sequencing and interpretation tools have the potential to provide them with answers.

-- 3D Vessel Reconstruction: The ILUMIEN OPTIS from St. Jude Medical offers a new perspective on coronary arteries, and has recently received FDA approval for launch.

-- Smelling Salmonella: Foodborne illnesses makes 1 in 6 Americans - or 48 million people - sick each year. It spreads easily, and is difficult to control, so quick detection is critical in halting its spread.
