Welcome to the Pulse, brought to you by MDT TV. Today, we're implanting an MRI-safe spinal cord stimulator, sorting blood with a microchip, building robots out of biocompatible hydrogel, and making hydrogel move with light. This episode features:

• Neurosurgeons have successfully implanted an MRI-safe spinal cord stimulator to help patients suffering from chronic back or limb pain.
• MIT scientists have developed a new microchip that can quickly separate white blood cells from samples of whole blood, eliminating any preliminary processing steps.
• Researchers have developed a new technique for creating devices out of a water-based hydrogel material that can be patterned, folded, and used to manipulate objects.
• Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have demonstrated the ability to transform the shape of hydrogels using only light.
