Performed by the SYC Ensemble Singers in Singapore International Choral Festival 2018 at Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore, on 19 July 2018.
Conducted by: Jennifer Tham

Commissioned by Jennifer Tham and the SYC Ensemble Singers in 2008, burrinjuck explores the elements of silence, stillness and surging energy with dramatic contrast.

The piece was set against the backdrop of a burrinjuck, an Aboriginal word that means “mountain with a rugged top” and is also the name of a village community around a lake in New South Wales, where Australian composer Stephen Leek spent time holidaying as a child.

Text:
Burrinjuck

Rising from the water, out of the distant shore
Rugged peaks to skyward soar
Mighty rugged mountains soar

Burrinjuck

Reaching upward through the abyss of the sky
Mother Earth stretches upward to where great eagles fly

Burrinjuck
