Performed by the SYC Ensemble Singers in Love! Be: Sing; at Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore, on 24 August 2019.
Conducted by: Jennifer Tham

Composed by Norwegian Torbjørn Dyrud, Lovesongs collectively draw their text from Song of Solomon, a book of the Old Testament written by King Solomon. Performed in “Love! Be: Sing” where the SYC Ensemble Singers offered a programme of 20th and 21st-century songs about love in different guises, Lovesong I depicts the ambiguity and unruliness of love, where the desire of love can drive people to acts of both generosity and cruelty.

Text:
I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.
As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.
As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.

Ego flos campi et lilium convallium.
Sicut lilium inter spinas sic amica mea inter filias.
Sicut malus inter ligna silvarum, sic dilectus meus inter filios.
Sub umbra illius quem desideraveram sedi, et fructus ejus dulcis gutturi meo.
