One of the Greatest poets to have ever lived, credited to be on par with Shakespeare and Dante around his time. He was a soldier, sailor, company wagie and a great poet not well known in the English speaking world. Luís’ great work, Os Lusíadas was a patriotic and epic poem of the Portuguese people, their feats as soldiers, sailors, traders, missionaries ect. Yet he was not blind, he still had one good eye that saw the nation he both loved and hated come to a violent end in the last years of his life, he wrote even in the grand poem, that they might be living in the final days of a Golden Age of Colonial and Imperial Portugal.
