Whether you are a beginner music producer or have some experience in music production, achieving crystal clear mixes can be tricky sometimes. But fortunately, in 2021 we have a lot of plugins that make the mixing process so easy that you literally don't really need to do a lot. So make sure to watch this video till the end because I'm gonna teach you guys how to fix frequency masking with the 2021 method.

Let's start with a theory? What is frequency masking? Imagine you have two sounds that take the same frequency spectrum and they play together at the same time. In this case, you won't hear any of these instruments well, because their frequencies take the same space in the mix. So, the question is how to solve that problem?

Before we start applying the actual technique you need to understand one thing. You won't be able to achieve a clean and transparent mix if you don't have a proper arrangement and sound design. In electronic dance music, it doesn't work the same as it does in rock or pop music for example. We need to get a good sound from the very beginning, when we select the samples, do sound design for our leads, bass, and also we need to arrange our tracks properly.

When you know all of these rules it will be so much easier for you to mix your tracks. Of course, you can break these rules and in this step-by-step Ableton live tutorial I'm going to show you how to do that in a nice way, but still, it's very important that you know the theory.

And now when you know the context I can teach you how to fix frequency masking with the 2021 method. We're are gonna be using a dynamic resonance suppressor. It's a brand new technology that was invented a couple of years ago and in 2020 a plugin called soothe won an award "2020 best plugin". If you want to know how to make your mixes clear and transparent you need to use the latest technology. In this tutorial, I'm gonna be using a plugin by baby audio called smooth operator. It doesn't matter what plugin you use as long as you follow the tips from this video.
