There two surfaces on a fishplate that you could argue is more important than any other, and that is the fishing surfaces. The fishing surfaces are the only surface of the plate that actually contacts the rail. Through this surface the force that keeps the rail ends in place is exerted, but also movement along this surface allows the rail to expand and contract as the temperature changes.
