In this video, Dr. Nidhi Jain, an Obstetrician and a Gynecologist specializing in female cosmetic procedures will explain female sexuality especially related to hymen and virginity. She mentions that virginity means someone who has never had sexual intercourse, and the hymen is a thin piece of tissue in the inner surface of the vagina. It is not a complete membrane, it has a hole in the middle, and different people have different-looking hymens.
Hymen can be torn/lost without any sexual activity and during activities like stretching, gymnastics, etc. It is also said that hymen is the only indicator of virginity status; in reality, it is not because the presence or absence of a hymen does not define virginity. Even qualified gynecologists may not be able to tell if a person has had sexual intercourse or not after looking at the hymen. Another myth is that the hymen is rigid and penetrable, but in reality, the tissue is stretchy and flexible, so it does not necessarily tear with penetration.
This idea that the hymen breaks when we first have sex has also led to a belief that our first time should be painful. In reality, pain during penetration is more likely to be caused by anxiety or sexual inexperience than by stretching the hymen.
While some cultures continue to carry out ‘virginity testing, (WHO) World Health Organization declares virginity testing a breach of human rights. Moreover, understanding our reproductive health is a great way to tackle myths and misinformation.
