Susie Q is a song composed by Dale Hawkins with guitarist James Burton, but credited as co-authors to Stan Lewis, the Jewl/Paula Records producer, and Eleanor Broadwater, the wife of DJ Gene Nobles, so that they would receive royalties from the song. The song was originally released by singer and guitarist Dale Hawkins on the single Susie Q/Don't Treat Me This Way. The record reached No. 27 on the U.S. pop chart in 1957.
Creedence Clearwater Revival included a version on their 1968 debut album of the same name. Released as a single on a 7" split (side A and side B), it was one of their first hits and the group's only Top 40 hit not written by John Fogerty. John sang the first and third verses, while his brother Tom sang the second. The riff John plays during the second solo is taken from the song Smokestack Lightning by Howlin' Wolf. A full version of it was later released on 12" with the song I Heard It Through the Grapevine on the back. An extraordinary interpretation was the one played live by Johnny Winter at the Essen concert in 1969, broadcast by Rockpalast.
The song was the subject of several covers. The Rolling Stones did their own version on their album 12 x 5, released in 1964 in America, and on The Rolling Stones No.2, released in 1965 in Great Britain.
Mangaka Hirohiko Araki gave the name Susie Q to a female character in the series The Bizarre Adventures of JoJo, specifically in the Battle Tendency saga.
The name Suzie Q was also given to the powerful right fist of the legendary Rocky Marciano.
