Whatever You Want is a single by the British rock band Status Quo, released on September 14, 1979 as the first single from their twelfth studio album of the same name. Status Quo wrote the song Whatever You Want: inspiration struck guitarist Rick Parfitt unexpectedly at the end of 1978, when he managed to write a large part of the piece together with keyboardist Andy Bown in the midst of an alcohol binge. The composition, originally conceived with a more complex structure than the final product, was later stripped down and simplified (even in the lyrics) and some chords were deliberately cut in order to make it more accessible and direct to listen to.
Famous as a "filler" for the lively and cheerful tones of its rhythm, the song actually features melancholic and introspective lyrics, largely due to the difficult time experienced by the band members, who were all isolated at this stage, far from English territory for tax reasons and prey to addictions (especially cocaine). The lyrics (Whatever you want, whatever you like...) express a bitter reflection on the pitfalls and traps of success, capable of seducing, deluding and deceiving, leading, if badly managed, to feeling even more unhappy and less free.
The piece was welcomed by music critics and, given the beauty of the guitar riffs (especially in the introductory crescendo), many industry insiders went so far as to define its initial part as the best that had ever been composed and recorded for a piece of rock music. Published on 14 September 1979, the 45 rpm immediately went to the top of the charts (fourth place in the United Kingdom) and also established itself as one of the most loved and appreciated pieces in discos.
