Blinken Slams Israel For Activist's "Unprovoked" Killing, Biden Backs IDF's "Indirect" Firing Claim
The Israeli military has admitted on September 10 that the American activist killed in the West Bank on September 6 was “likely” shot by its soldiers. Israel said a criminal probe has been launched into the killing of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, an activist from Seattle.
The 26-year-old, who also held a Turkish citizenship, was killed during a demonstration against settlements in the West Bank.
Israel said its inquiry “found that it is highly likely that Eygi was hit indirectly and unintentionally by (Israeli army) fire.” Israel also expressed its “deepest regret” at her death, adding that the bullet was “not aimed at her, but at the key instigator of the riot”.
International Solidarity Movement, the activist group Egyi was volunteering with, said it “entirely rejects” the Israeli statement and that the “shot was aimed directly at her.”
The killing came amid a surge of violence in the West Bank since the Israel-Hamas war began in October.
