Medieval towns are known to be intensely busy places and some people believe they were also very backwards. The Medieval period is known throughout history to have been a rather dirty era, and towns were sometimes extremely squalid and horrific.

However one of the main characteristics of a Medieval settlement was town walls. These town walls today in many places still stand and have really stood the test of time. Not much else remains from the Medieval period, however these walls still stand. But why were they needed?

Recently I visited the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north of England, and the place is known for its remarkable Elizabethan walls, in which many bastions have been built inside. So join us today as we look at 'Why Did Medieval Towns Have Walls?'
