Dr. Stephanie Schuttler is a wildlife biologist and and science communicator. Her research focuses on understanding the ecology, behavior, and conservation of mammals, and human attitudes towards wildlife. She collaborates with K-12 teachers worldwide to implement citizen science camera-trapping into their classrooms. Stephanie is highly interested in increasing people’s connections to nature and overall scientific literacy through all forms of science communications. She created her own blog, http://www.stephanieschuttler.com, to break stereotypes of scientists and encourage people to learn about wildlife and live more sustainably.
The biggest threat to conservation is not enough people caring about nature to want to conserve it. This is largely driven by our connection to nature. Without these connections, people won’t care when nature disappears and won’t engage in activities or practices that help conservation. In this livestream, Dr. Schuttler talks about how we can create and reform these broken connections to nature, especially with kids. She’ll share how we can build these connections while directly contributing to real scientific research. Dr. Schuttler will share the results of her worldwide camera trap study on mammals conducted by kids. She’ll also leave you with programs that you can participate in today to help you connect to nature and help scientists collect important data to continue monitoring our declining biodiversity.
