We wanted to test the Synology DS1621+ as a PLEX Server. Can the beasty but GPU-less Synology NAS run as a PLEX Server? Lets find out.

The Synology DS1621+ is indeed one of the most powerful NAS devices in the Synology lineup this year. Together with its fantastic upgradability options, this NAS is almost completely future proof. but, running the Synology DS1621+ as a PLEX Server can be challenging.

The Synology DS1621+ runs an AMZ Ryzen V1500B (4-core 2.2 GHz). This AMD Ryzen variant CPU does not include a GPU built into it. This means that when it comes to media transcoding, no hardware transcoding can be done.

The Synology DS1621+ can still serve as a PLEX Server as long as you only direct play videos. 1080p videos on 1080p screens, 4k videos on 4k screens, etc. if you only direct play you videos or even watch 1080p videos on 4k screens, chances are you will be satisfied with the DS1621+ as a PLEX Server.

Having said that, if your only or primary feature you are looking for in a NAS is running a PLEX server on it, than maybe the DS1621+ will not be your first choice. but you already own a DS1621+ for all its other advantages, you can run a PLEX server on it, in certain conditions.
