Lecture by Gary Rogers
Oakmont Historical Society 125th Anniversary Lecture Series
8/25/2014
Big bands, camping, riverboats and races are remembered in Down by the Riverside. Just over ten miles from downtown Pittsburgh, Oakmont was one of the biggest resort towns in the early 1900’s. From high stake betting on canoe races to seeing Rudy Vallee at the Willows Night Club, hundreds of people from Pittsburgh vacationed in Oakmont every year. Take a ride up the Allegheny River and relive the days of the Big Band Era, recreational life through two World Wars and Willows Pool’s infamous “Pop” Gerding as the music from the 1930’s play again in the historical lecture, Down by the Riverside.
