Sumo's future stars face off at the All Japan Sumo Championships
When most people think of sumo they think of the pageantry and tradition of the six annual grand tournaments. But below the professional ranks are amateurs from high schools, universities and even corporate teams, all honing their skills as they potentially aim for ozumo.
We visited the famed Ryogoku Kokugikan for the 69th All-Japan Sumo Championships, the country's top amateur tournament, to learn why some of the most exciting sumo happens outside the pro ranks.
