PCI DSS Requirement 8, which focuses on identifying and authenticating access to system components, has seen notable updates from version 3.2.1 to 4.0. One significant change is the enhanced emphasis on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all access into the cardholder data environment (CDE). This update mandates MFA not just for remote access but also for local access, thus strengthening the security posture by ensuring multiple layers of authentication.

Moreover, version 4.0 introduces stricter controls on password management and user account administration. This includes more rigorous guidelines for password complexity, expiration, and reuse, as well as more detailed procedures for account provisioning and deprovisioning. These changes aim to mitigate the risk of unauthorized access by enforcing stronger authentication measures and ensuring that user credentials are managed securely and effectively.
