Did you know Mount Rushmore was never finished? And you can see the sculptor's model of what it was supposed to look like.

The whole Mount Rushmore experience is a lot better than you'd think it would be. We thought it was just going to be the presidents carved on the mountain, but the Avenue of Flags, the exhibits down below, the Sculptor's Studio, and the Presidential Trail were all really cool.

0:36 - First views and Avenue of Flags. You first enter the memorial and you see flags from each state. Find yours (they're in alphabetical order so it makes it easier).

0:46 - Grand View Terrace. That's exactly what it sounds like. Such a grand view. :)

0:57 - Exhibits. Learn all about the presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt), the sculptor (Gutzon Borglum), and lots about the sculpture. Watch the movie; it's really interesting. It's 14 minutes long and plays every 20 minutes (:00, :20, and :40).

1:33 - Sculptor's Studio. Check out what Mount Rushmore was supposed to look like. We didn't realize that the sculpture wasn't ever completed. It was interrupted by World War II and never finished. The Sculptor's Studio has a full model of what it was supposed to look like.

1:56 - Presidential Trail. Lots of stairs, but cool views of the presidents and interesting facts about the carving process.

2:48 - Sunset and the night show. Watch them light the monument and recognize all the veterans in the audience. It's really patriotic.

Night Show Details:
From late May to the end of September, they do a full show every night and make a big deal out of lighting the memorial. They sing the national anthem, recognize all the veterans and currently enlisted military in each branch of service, and lower the flag. They also show a short movie and talk a little about the history of Mt Rushmore and why each president was featured.

The night show is subject to weather. They decided to skip the little movie and speech our night because the weather was getting bad.

We were there on a Monday night in July and you can see how busy it was. I imagine if you're there on a weekend or holiday, you'll have to get there early if you want a seat. If you can't find a seat, you can stand on the Grand View Terrace and see everything just fine.

Late May to mid-August - Show starts at 9:00 p.m.
Mid August to End of September - Show starts at 8:00 p.m.
October 1 to late May - No Evening Lighting Ceremony, but the memorial is illuminated nightly.

A couple tips:
Mount Rushmore is technically free to visit, but you must pay to park. Your National Parks pass does NOT cover parking. It's $10 to park a car, but that parking pass is good for 1 year, so feel free to leave and come back like we did.

There are not many places to stay in the area. We camped at Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park. It's gorgeous.
