This video is designed to help people visualize the differences between the four families of instruments. There are many ways to think about how these families are different, and one such way is to understand the mechanics behind how an instrument from each of these families plays the C Major scale. They all do it very differently- percussion, for example, almost always use a keyboard style layout (but not always) to which they touch or strike the note. String instruments, by contrast, primarily use the fretboard layout where strings are pressed with one hand as the other hand plucks, strums, or bows the string. Woodwinds and Brass, though similar in some ways, are very different in how they approach each note. Woodwinds memorize fingering patterns that often utilize 9 (sometimes all 10) fingers to play a single note, where as brass players memorize a table of possible notes for each of their simplified fingering positions. Taken as a whole, we can start to see how each instrumental family is actually very different from the others in how that family thinks about and plays sounds.

To aid teachers wishing to use this video as a lesson, I've created a free printable-foldable play-along sheet that students can use as they watch the video. Using just one sheet folded twice, students will be able to play along with the glockenspiel, violin, trumpet, and recorder- helping them with the tactile experience of what it would be like to play these notes.
