Nmap is a network scanning tool, used for enumerating the network, host discovery and security auditing.
Very useful tool and can go quite deep in a Network or a specific host scan.
Nmap performs:
Scanning every active IP address
Entire network scans
Identifying Server vulnerabilities
Automate scans system and vulnerabilities. (NSE - NMAP Scripting Engine)
This video goes a little deeper into nmap scripts, where the information gained from a 'vuln' scan throws up some very useful details about a device. You can then patch that device, so it no longer vulnerable:

00:30 - Nmap Scanning using built in scripts.

01:05 - Nmap scan using the vuln parameter.
02:06 - How to archive your results for housekeeping and later report writing.
