Reading CSV or Text files should be pretty straight forward but even I'm stumped from time to time. The problem is that sometimes Tableau Desktop / Prep can get confused with the structure of the CSV as they're not all the same.
3 things that make up the structure of a CSV or Text file:
1. Delimiter or Separator: This tells the software when one column starts and the next begins.
2. Content: This is the information under each field
3. Text Qualifier: This encloses the content in the event that the Delimiter also exists in the data set itself.
In some cases, the CSV you're working with may not follow the standard pattern and this is where Tableau gets confused. Luckily there are some simple settings you can play with that will help you fix this issue.
