Artists, are you learning as a form of procrastination?

🚩 Here's the truth: You'll never feel fully ready or prepared to do the big thing. There's never going to be a perfect time to tackle that big project.

🚩 Here's a second truth: It's not until you actually do the thing, repeatedly, that you'll make the progress you're looking for AND gain the confidence you need to push on to bigger, bolder things.

🖌️ If you've spent months working on color swatches, going down rabbit holes reading articles or forum posts trying to understand small technicalities about paper/paint/other tools, or practicing very beginner-level illustrations because deep down you're afraid of doing more challenging things:

👉 Ask yourself if you're using your learning and preparing as a way to procrastinate.

🧟 How about not turning art creation into a big scary monster?

🖌️ How about seeing things as they are: just paint, paper and brushes?

👩‍🎨 How about not expecting to create masterpieces every time and accepting that you'll be producing lots of "bad" art and lots of "meh" art, to produce the pieces you're really proud of?

🧘‍♀️ And how about embracing where you're at in your journey, relaxing into your learning, and enjoying yourself?

This life is too short, people. Don't give too much importance to things when it's not needed. Prioritize what's important to get to where you want to be and don't overcomplicate things.

And, please, PLEASE! Enjoy yourself!

I've had so many conversations with community members and students throughout my years of teaching, and I have found this a big struggle for many artists.

🌟 Learning and preparing is important. Don't get me wrong. I believe in preparing before jumping into full pieces.

But when too much of your time is spent in this stage, and you never tackle the big thing, it can be a problem.

Make sure you're focusing on the right things if you're looking for deeper progress, or you'll be keeping yourself stuck. 💕
