Bach composed his Cello Suites between 1717 and 1723, when he was attached to the court of Köthen. Probably conceived for Christian Ferdinad Abel or Christian Bernhard Linike, these works give a new dimension as a soloist to the cello, which until then served as accompanist and harmonic support in instrumental ensembles.
