AMERICAN HISTORY X - Is Race Real? (Film Analysis)

The Black Lives Matter movement made me think about the film American History X, the 1998 film directed by Tony Kaye, and starring Edward Norton and Edward Furlong. Specifically, it made me think about the concept of race, where racism came from, and how the film relates to both explicit and systemic racism in the world today. In this film analysis/video essay, we use American History X as a way to think about what we know (and don't know) about race, and what authors and scientists say about the effects of race on science and public sentiment.



The ideas presented in this video are a mix of my own personal opinion as well as both scientific and non-scientific literature. As this can be a complex issue, the arguments for and against the theories presented are not covered in depth, and I have oversimplified where I saw fit. The 1972 paper by Richard Lewontin and the arguments against his paper are linked below.
