Want to master Upwork? Learn everything you need to know to start getting clients on Upwork inside my book, Upwork Essentials here: https://johnmorrisonline.com/essentials
There's lots you COULD do... but let me give you the things that are the highest leverage and will give you the most bang for your buck...
1. Pick a good niche...
It's the #1 thing that'll determine your success and why my book Upwork Essentials is all about this one thing.
Big enough to get consistent work, but small enough to be able to compete.
A balance between profit, passion, and skill. You gotta do work you enjoy and are good at... but also that people will actually pay for.
It's a delicate balance and requires research.
2. Start small...
Established Upworkers don't really like taking the smaller projects. That's good for you. It creates an opening for someone new.
Do smaller projects to build your job history to help you land the bigger ones. And establish client relationships, build your portfolio, get practice, etc.
3. Prove it...
Back up every claim you make about your ability, what you will do, your character, etc. Lots of people talk lots of junk and clients are desensitized to it.
Prove what you can do with testimonials, credentials, your portfolio, etc.
Do these three things, as a beginner, and you will start landing clients. It's just a matter of time.
