A talk given by Andrew Waithaka from Kong at the 2024 Austin API Summit in Austin, Texas.

As monoliths get broken down into microservices, the attack surface grows exponentially. Security teams can struggle to maintain the same controls and visibility across a multitude of services rather than a single application. This session explores common microservice security pitfalls like increased blast radius from misconfigurations, lateral movement across services, and lack of holistic visibility.

We’ll explore best practices for microservice security including service meshes like Kong Mesh. We’ll show how service mesh can provide authentication, authorization, encryption, and observability across all services no matter where they reside. Attendees will learn how Kong Mesh secures communication between services and gives one cohesive view into the health and security of the entire environment.
