The academic field of biology has undergone significant changes in almost all areas in recent years and decades, mainly due to new working methods at the molecular level. This has resulted in new interdisciplinary areas of research in the natural sciences, such as biochemistry, biophysics, biomedicine, and bioinformatics. At the same time, new application-oriented biological disciplines with bright future prospects for both science and industry, such as genetic engineering and biotechnology, have developed with remarkable speed.
The Dean of the JGU Faculty of Biology, Professor Eckhard Thines, reports on how the faculty has kept pace with this continuous diversification over the past 25 years. Today, the JGU Faculty of Biology offers its students a wide range of biological fields for study and research, providing comprehensive and multifaceted education and training with excellent career prospects.
Research at the JGU Faculty of Biology focuses on three topic areas:
• Evolution, biodiversity, and anthropology
• Neurobiology and developmental biology
• Molecular structure biology, cell biology, and biotechnology.
The Faculty of Biology is closely collaborating with the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB), which is also located on the Gutenberg campus. Funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation and the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, the IMB concentrates on innovative areas of modern biological research, such as developmental biology and epigenetics.
