What Is a Sand Battery?
A Finnish company called Polar Night Energy has made the first completely functional sand battery. A sand battery, is a storage unit that uses sand as its storage medium to store energy as heat. The purpose of the battery is to store excess electricity, participate to grid balancing, and produce heat and power without burning. It works by heating the sand inside the battery to up to 600 °C (1,112 °F) with excess electricity. This heat can be used in water-based heating systems when needed, for example when electricity cost is high.
