An 18-year-old caught in crossfire of a shooting was remembered Thursday night.
Shanye Mootry was killed during a gunfight in parking lot behind the Anthony Jordan Health Center on Holland Street early Monday morning, according to police.
Her family and friends returned to that location Thursday, not only to honor her memory but also to advocate for change.
Shanyce Mootry said she and her twin sister, Shanye, were the real definition of twins.
"We have been attached at the hip for as long as I can remember," Shanyce said. "It was us against the world."
Early Monday morning, Shanyce said she lost her other half when gunshots echoed through that parking lot on Holland Street, striking Shanye and killing her in the crossfire. Police said Shanye was not a part of the altercation during which she was shot.
"She had plans for her life," Shanyce said. "This was a situation that could have easily been avoided. An 18-year-old girl's life was taken."
