If you want to know bass layering tips and tricks this step by step ableton live tutorial is for you. It doesn't matter what DAW you use as long as you follow the tips I am giving you in this video. Whether you are a beginner music producer or have some experience layering can get tricky, but it's not that hard as you might think.
My approach to layering bass is to use different types of synthesizers, so we have a contrast. For this tutorial I'm gonna be using u-he Diva for my sub layer and ableton wavetable for the top layer. If you use this bass layering technique for your next track you will see an amazing result! If you want to know how to make a powerful sub bass, just use analog synth vst like U-he Diva, since they usually producer more fat and ward sound.
You will learn some sound design basics like working with envelope, I'll show you how you can modulate the parameters of you synth. And also guys I'm gonna teach you how to control the frequency cutoff of your filter.
Don't forget to make your sub bass in mono, so we don't get any phase or frequency issues.
Now let's talk about how you can create a top bass layer with using my bass layering trick. Here you wan't to select more digital like wavetables, so we have a contrast. You can choose classic waveforms for you sub bass, like square, since, triangle and saw. By using this tech house bass layering technique you will get a nice contrast between your top and sub layer. Basically, we want to do the same thing for our top bass. We're gonna modulate our filter with the envelope here as well, but for the top bass we are also going to modulate the wavetable position, this will make your bass more alive and add more movement and that will help you to make your tracks more interesting for the listener.
And I'm also gonna show you how to mix tech house bass. We are gonna use and equaliser and cut the low end of our top bass, so the it's low frequencies doesn't interfere with our sub bass.
So that was it guys, as you can see it's not hard at all to layer your bass, you just need to follow those basic sound design techniques and do a little bit of mixing.
