"Broken Shackles" or "Broken Chains," was the first national anthem of the Romanian People's Republic until 1953, written by Romanian socialist realist poet Aurel Baranga. It served as the anthem of the Romanian people's democracy up until the death of Stalin and subsequent stifling of socialist construction in Romania by Nikita Khrushchev and his fellow conspirators. During the era of people's democracy in Romania, the Communist Party led the people of Romania in nearly totally rebuilding their country after the destruction of World War II, bringing Nazi collaborators and war criminals from the Iron Guard and SS to justice, and significantly raising the standard of living of Romania, industrialising the country and transforming it on a basis the Romanian people never could have dreamed of, giving them, for the first and only time, democratic control over their country and fates.
