Sheriff: Charging device plugged into outlet sparked Ovid blaze

A charging device plugged into an electrical outlet was the source of a "historic" fire that destroyed four buildings Tuesday night on Main Street in Ovid, Seneca County Sheriff Timothy Thompson said Wednesday.

A 911 call came in just after 5:45 p.m. for a fire at an apartment above the Ovid Big M. Investigators said a resident reported plugging in the device — which Ovid Fire Chief Timothy Westlake described as a power bank portable power source — before noticing it was smoking hours later. She said she then gathered her children and fled the apartment.
