Develop smart spending habits and learn how to control spending in just two minutes or less.
Sometimes, the best way to stop overspending is to change how we think about what things cost. Instead of thinking of price in terms of dollars and cents, what if we considered the hours we’d have to work to in order to pay that price?
For example, a 15-dollar entrée would be about 60 minutes of work. A 2-dollar salad would be 8 minutes of work. And the 3-dollar dessert would be another 12 minutes of work. In total that 20-dollar meal would equate to 80 minutes of work.
It takes some practice, but when you get in the habit of looking at purchases this way, the real cost of the stuff you buy becomes much more apparent. You may decide some of those things are absolutely worth it. But with this trick, it’s easier to resist the things that aren’t.
Of course, the “hours worked” mentality is just one smart spending strategy. Be sure to read the full blog post for tons more tips and expert advice.
