Full video Saturday. When consumption was at its peak in the early 19th century, they desperately searched for any reasons behind the spread of the disease. It seemed to defy logic; crossing boundaries of class, race, and gender with no predictability. Instead, they turned to ideas of "excitement" where blame fell onto actions like drinking, dancing, long walks, and even reading novels. Fashion was at the forefront of blame, however, with everything from shoes to hats being cast into doubt. Obviously, it changed almost nothing, and fashion continued to be worn despite the constant complaints.
