JS3 RES Electric Self Launch Performance
Full electric self-launch performance of the JS3 RES glider. Tried a typical launch from Hollister CA towards Panoche CA. The mountains between are where we usually find first lift, so this is the real use case for me. At the end, I was 17 nautical miles out and had 25:1 glide to Panoche at about 6000 ft. MSL with 19% left on the batteries. This will work out very well in the Spring time.
I was worried about the battery temperature. According to the manual, this looked like it was going to be the limiting factor, but they were very well-behaved and far below the limit of 70 C. The MCP limit seems to come from the motor, which is an air-cooled EMRAX, that hovers at 100 C at about 25 kW.
Overall, very happy with the system Jonker Sailplanes has delivered! Can't wait for some real soaring in the next few months.
